Mumbai: Just before the BMC elections to be held in Mumbai, the politics of Maharashtra have once again become heated. Congress has announced that it will contest the Municipal Corporation elections alone, due to which the tension within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is clearly visible. Soon after the decision, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said that Congress has the right to contest elections independently, and his party will also decide the way forward on its own.

Why did Congress decide to contest separate elections?

Mumbai Congress had been demanding for a long time to field its candidates in all the 227 wards. The party believes that the opinion of local leadership is important in local body elections. Apart from this, differences within the MVA regarding Raj Thackeray's MNS continued to increase. Congress and NCP (SP) were strongly opposing it, while Shiv Sena (UBT) had a different stand. These differences almost ended the seat-sharing talks.

Will this deepen the rift in MVA?

Congress's decision has raised questions on the unity of the opposition alliance. Political experts believe that if the three parties of Aghadi adopt different strategies, then BJP and Shinde faction can directly benefit from it. Although Aghadi leaders say that this does not formally end the alliance, it is clear that it is now difficult to form a united front in the BMC elections.

What message did Uddhav Thackeray give?

Uddhav Thackeray gave a very balanced statement. He said that the decision of Congress is their internal matter and every party has its own political needs. He also said that his party will also announce its election strategy soon.

On the results of the Bihar elections, Uddhav also raised questions on the role of the Election Commission and said that it is most important to maintain trust in the election process in the country.

Will Congress contest elections independently in future also?

Congress leaders are clearly indicating that, like the BMC elections, the party can go alone in other municipal bodies also. The party believes that its urban vote bank has weakened over the years, and fighting independently is a better strategy to revive it.

What will be the impact on Mumbai politics?

Shiv Sena has been dominating BMC for decades, but this time the contest has opened in many directions. The separation of Congress may break the joint vote of MVA. BJP and Shinde Shiv Sena have already started preparations and Congress's decision is being considered as a big opportunity for them.

The picture is now clear in Mumbai's biggest municipal corporation elections—every party wants to try its strength, and that is why this fight has become more interesting than the previous elections.
